The cardianl virtues are not made up by human philosphy as a consensus document for human practice. They are gifts of God, and they reflect what God is and what God values. Aquinas makes this point on the origin of the cardinal virtues by citing Augustine, "The soul needs to follow something in order to give birth to virtue. This something is God, and if we follow, Him, we shall live the good life."
